ABOUT THE PROJECT
The Sustainable Roots Program is a nutrition promotion program funded by The Light
Foundation implemented in Buhera and Tsholotsho districts of Zimbabwe for a 5-year period.
The program seeks to support rural communities to increase nutritional status of women, children, and their households by promoting production and consumption of traditional and local foods. The program will apply regenerative agriculture, soil and water and sustainable
use of forest products to meet dietary and health needs. The SRP program will support
communities with improved access to water for domestic and productive use and will work
closely Government Departments to ensure appropriate and synergistic implementation. The
program is implemented by a consortium led by CARE Zimbabwe and includes Organization of
Rural Associations for Progress and Nutrition Action Zimbabwe.
POSITION SUMMARY
The Agriculture Officer will support community groups in expansion of their agricultural
livelihoods, key roles will include conducting field visits and surveys to assess the needs of
farmers and rural communities, providing technical guidance and training on best practices,
developing and implementing plans for agricultural development, monitoring and
evaluating the impact of agricultural interventions, liaising with other stakeholders to coordinate agricultural activities, and advocating for agricultural issues. He/she will advise on technologies and innovations in crop production, animal husbandry, soil and water management, pest and disease control, post-harvest handling, food security, natural resource conservation, and raising awareness among farmers and the public
RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Planning Agricultural Related Project Activities
a. Serve as Meets with the Field Supervisor and discusses project details such as
agronomy and Agric related activities and field budgets
b. Develops an activity plan and Individual Operating Plan (IOP) for
agriculture/agronomic activities in line with project Annual Operating Plan (AOP)
and submits to Field Supervisor for guidance.
c. Plans weekly, monthly and quarterly project activities.
2. Agronomy Support
a. Mobilise producer farmers to contribute resources for production, post-harvest
reduction and marketing selected commodities including maize, beans, sorghum.
b. Prepare and conduct producer organization and association profiling and capacity
assessment to identify needs including training and input needs.
c. Develop and or improve comprehensive training materials for effective delivery of
training to the producer groups and associations.
d. Implement timely participatory and pragmatic training in farming as a business,
postharvest handling, and value addition and in accordance with the training
curriculum agreed and validated with the producer groups and associations.

e. Support producer groups to establish strong formal legal, governance and
operational committees to improve their performance and institutional capacity.
3. Agric related monitoring and evaluation.
a. Monitor, follow up and mentor group performance with support from the Agriculture Purpose Manager.
b. Conduct regular crop performance monitoring and provide technical production
advice to producer groups.
c. Contribute to the development of monthly, quarterly and yearly work plans and
reports.
4. Stakeholder Coordination
a. Manages relationships with stakeholders including Government line Ministries,
NGOs and private sector at Ward level
b. Shares project activity plans with relevant line ministries
c. Liaises with Agritex, Livestock Production Department and Veterinary on project
monitoring at ward level
QUALIFICATIONS:
• Bachelor’s degree in agriculture, Agronomy, Soil Science, Horticulture, or a related
field. Advanced degree preferred.
• At least 3-4 years of experience in the field of agribusiness/agricultural production,
agricultural produce marketing, market information and linkages.
• Detailed knowledge of the specific context, issues and challenges related to
agricultural production and marketing in Zimbabwe.
• Experience in community mobilization and sensitization/training in the fields of
agriculture and marketing and strong technical knowledge in agricultural production
with an emphasis on enhancing produce quality.
• Proven knowledge of and experience in support and training of small-scale farmers in
enhancement of produce quality, post-harvest handling, and produce bulking,
collective marketing and market information.
• Proficiency in computer skills including experience of MS Word, Excel, MS Office Project,
• Understanding and demonstrated commitment to the importance of gender and youth
issues in food security programming.
